15 Essential Questions to Ask Before Travelling

Feb 17, 2016 | Simply Organize, Travelling Made Easy

Travelling can be so much fun, you get to experience new adventures, meet new people, see new places and create memories with the ones you love. But planning a holiday can be a bit overwhelming and stressful, especially if you don’t know where to begin…

To make things easier for you, I have created a list of 15 questions to help you with your travel planning. If there is one thing I have learned from studying tourism, it is that planning your holiday must be just as fun and adventurous as the holiday itself.

Before you begin answering these questions, make yourself a nice cup of coffee or tea, get your favorite notebook or planner and make yourself comfortable.

Are you comfortable? Right, now start answering these questions, to have your best adventure, yet.

  1. Where do I want to go? This is the most important question, without it all the other questions are irrelevant. Make a note if it is a local or international destination.
  1. When do I want to go? This can vary, depending on your situation. For example when you can get leave, when is the best time to visit the destination, etc. This is just a brainstorming session, so if you are uncertain about the date, just write down a time of year. But try to be as specific as possible.
  1. How long do I want to go? For a weekend? For the whole summer vacation? A quick getaway? You decide…
  1. Who will go with me? Family, friends, or maybe even alone? Just like knowing where you want to go, knowing how many people will go with you is just as important. Except if you are backpacking, traveling solo can cost a whole lot more, especially, when it comes to accommodation.
  1. Why do I want to take this holiday? The purpose of your holiday is also of great value because if your sole purpose is to relax and do nothing, you won’t arrange an action-packed holiday with 5 daily activities. By knowing the purpose of your holiday, the rest of the questions will be so much easier.
  1. What is my vacation budget? Yes, you do need a budget, when planning a holiday. It is very IMPORTANT to have a budget because this will determine the type of accommodation you can afford, your transport methods, what you are going to eat, as well as the attractions you can visit.
  1. How will I get there? By car? By plane? By boat? By train? Keep your budget in mind.
  1. Once there, how will I get around? If you fly, think of transfers to the hotel, how you will get to the attractions, etc. Or maybe you have family in the area that will offer to drive you around?
  1. Where will I stay? Will I be camping, staying with family or friends, or staying at a hotel? If not with someone I know, what type of accommodation is preferable? Will I be staying at different places or just in one place? Think of different scenarios, keeping in mind the different things you want to do or see at the destination.
  1. What attractions and sites do I want to see? Make a list of all the attractions you want to visit at your destination. Look out for special deals or family discounts, where applicable.
  1. What will I eat? If you’re booked into an all-inclusive resort or maybe a cruise ship, you don’t have to worry about food. If you go on a self-catering vacation, plan a few meals in advance. Or if you are visiting another country, make a list of foods you want to try.
  1. Do I need to buy anything for this trip? If you are planning a camping holiday, but you don’t own a tent, it might be a bit problematic. Think of items you don’t have, that will make your trip more comfortable.
  1. Do I need specific documentation for this trip? Think along the lines of a valid passport, ID, driver’s license, etc. Anything you will need to make this vacation a success.
  1. Are there any other notes or side adventures I want to take? Here you can write down any notes or ideas, which you might not have mentioned above.
  1. How can I save money on this vacation? At this point, you might be thinking, heck, how will I even be able to afford this trip? There are so many aspects to a holiday. Being in that state of mind, reflect on the notes that you have made and see if there are any creative ways in which you can save some money, without spoiling all the fun.

You have made it. Victory dance…

Now that you have completed your holiday planning notes, you can start booking your dream adventure. Remember the planning must be just as fun as the actual trip.

I would love to hear from you. Where are you planning your next vacation to? Did these questions help in any way to make the planning smoother? Please feel free to comment below.
